Fuel prices are among the most frequently checked pieces of daily information for Malaysians, because they directly affect transport costs and household spending. This page shows the latest RON95, RON97 and diesel prices, along with a cost calculator to help you plan your monthly fuel budget.

Malaysia uses an Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM) that reviews retail fuel prices weekly. New prices take effect every Thursday and remain in place until the following Wednesday. Under this system, RON97 and Euro 5 diesel in the Peninsula follow market prices, while RON95 is held at a government-set ceiling price for eligible citizens through the BUDI95 targeted subsidy programme.

RON95 remains the most popular fuel in Malaysia due to its lower price and suitability for the majority of passenger cars. RON97 offers a higher octane rating suited to high-performance engines. For diesel, Peninsular Malaysia uses a managed market price, while Sabah and Sarawak enjoy a lower subsidised diesel price.

When are Malaysia petrol prices updated?+

Retail fuel prices in Malaysia are updated weekly and take effect from Thursday through the following Wednesday. The announcement is usually made by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) on Wednesday evening or Thursday.

What is the difference between RON95 and RON97?+

RON stands for Research Octane Number — a fuel's ability to resist engine 'knocking'. RON95 suits most ordinary passenger cars, while RON97 has a higher octane rating and is recommended for high-performance or turbocharged engines. RON95 is subsidised for eligible citizens, while RON97 is sold at market price.

What is BUDI95 and who qualifies?+

BUDI95 is a targeted RON95 subsidy that gives a subsidised price to eligible Malaysian citizens, while non-citizens and the very high-income group pay market price. The mechanism aims to ensure subsidies reach those who genuinely need them.

Why is diesel priced differently in Sabah and Sarawak?+

Diesel in East Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan) remains subsidised at a lower rate than in the Peninsula, where diesel has been rationalised to a managed-float market price. This is partly due to economic and logistical considerations in Borneo.

How are fuel prices determined?+

Market prices are calculated from global oil prices (the MOPS — Mean of Platts Singapore reference), the Ringgit-to-US Dollar exchange rate, transport costs, dealer and station margins, plus taxes. For subsidised fuels, the government absorbs the difference between the market price and the ceiling price.
